I have a 1998 Volvo V70 GLT Wagon, with 104K miles.

Lately, particularly when the engine has been running a bit, the car idles roughly when I'm stopped at a light. It sometimes occurs when I'm in park, but not as often, and not as rough. The roughness is that it's not steady, it surges - so it will idles normally, then have a brief rough-surge, then idle relatively normally again. The closest I can come to describing it, is that it feels like it's about to stall, but then goes back to normal.

What do you think - just a tune-up, ore a death knell?

It sounds like a vacuum leak or a bad idle air controller. Go to a shop with a smoke tester and pay his one hour fee to see the source of the vacuum leak. Good Luck
