1987 Volkswagen Quantum Heater Core Fix
Replacement procedures are below for your vehicle's heater core..
REMOVAL:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the cooling system.
Remove the two heater inlet hoses at the firewall.
NOTE:
On some 1977 and later models, it is possible to remove the heater core without removing the heater case. To determine if this is possible on your vehicle, remove the center console side panels (if equipped). Locate the heater core cover positioned on the side of the case. Remove the screws or unclip the cover, then remove the cover for access. If there is sufficient clearance to pull the core out without damaging the heater tubes, remove the core from the case and you may skip the rest of the removal procedure.
Remove the heater case. Locate the heater core cover located on the side of the case. Remove the screws or unclip the cover, then remove it.
The heater core can now be slid out from the case. If the retaining clips break off, don't worry, they can be replaced with screws.
INSTALLATION:
Insert the heater core into the case. Install the heater core cover, making sure that the gasket on the cover is properly fitted.
If applicable, install the heater case.
Connect the heater hoses at the firewall. Make sure the seal fits tightly without any gaps. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.

Suggested Repair
Disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the cooling system, and remove the two heater inlet hoses at the firewall. If clearance allows, remove the center console side panels and the heater core cover on the side of the case, then pull the core out. Otherwise remove the heater case, take off the side cover, and slide the core out. Reinstall the core and cover with the gasket fitted, reconnect the hoses with a tight seal, and refill the cooling system.
Conversation Summary
The owner of a 1987 Volkswagen Quantum asked where the heater core is and how to replace it. An expert outlined removal and installation: disconnect the battery, drain the coolant, disconnect the firewall heater hoses, and either pull the core from the side cover if clearance allows or remove the heater case and slide the core out. Installation reverses those steps and includes refilling the cooling system.
