1985 Other Volkswagen Models ignition switch

some one gave me a 1985 vanagon, has not ran in 5 years. i have replaced a bunch of wires that mice have chewed, all that i can see any way. when i went to start it the ignition switch seemed like it didnt have any resistance it would go forward lights would come on but it never turned over. then i took the key out and lights stayed on. not sure if i should replace switch or controll unit. or somthing i dont know about. any help would be much appreciated.

sounds like the ignition switch will need replacement since the lights didnt run of when the key was turned to off.

the control rod could be bad but chances are the switch has failed. since they did turn on.
