Hello. I have a 1988 VW Jetta GL. I lost my ignition key when I moved and am trying to get a key made with no luck. I removed both driver and passenger door handles looking for the code and they arent there. So I found a diagram on the net describing how to remove the ignition to get the code there. And I have drilled 3 different holes into the ignition housing and still cant find the release plate. Im at my wits end trying to figure this out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You shouldnt have to drill any holes into the housing. There should be a small hole already on the housing. According to the factory repair manual you have to have a key to get it off though, by inserting the key and turning it to the on position, and insterting a paper clip into the hole, releasing the ignition from its housing. I may be wrong though. I would just have it towed to the local VW dealership and have them do the work. :- Hope this helps.
