1974 Volkswagen Beetle little red light

A little red light is on on my speedomiter with a G above it I cant get it to turn off I need help to get it off it stays on when car is off and it is not on when car is running please help me fix this

I believe that is the alternator light. If it stays on with the engine off, there may be a bad diode in the alt that is allowing power to pass back through the alt to ground. Have the alt tested. Most parts stores will do it for free. Ask them to make sure to pay special attention to the diodes.
