I seem to recall this engine doesn't have a seal, per se, but what they call an oil slinger, essentially a washer. I didn't remember whether you have to split the case, but this video

shows pretty clearly it sits in a groove in the case, so, yes, you'd have to spit the case. Now that I look back on this, I wonder how that even retains oil pressure? One of the bug's many wonders.
