I have the car listed above non turbo. When I go to start it without even touching the gas, sometimes it starts up right away, but sometimes it doesn’t. A long time ago, I had this problem (flooding maybe?), So someone installed a fuel cut off (toggle) switch to shut the electronic fuel injection off and then try to start it to get rid of the fuel in the chamber. I would then turn the fuel supply back on and it would start up. So why would it go all these year without having to do that & now I have to? Is that a clear indication it needs a tune-up?

I should mention that I have change the wires and plugs about two years ago

Hello,

These engine lose compression and have an intermittent starting issue. lets do a compression test to see if the engine is okay.

Please run down this guide and report back.

I shall. Thank you. The mechanic who used to work at Mazda suggested a timing check. Should I go ahead with that or just do a compression test first?

I would do the compression test so you don't waste your time. These engines go about 100,000 then give up. FYI
