The most common reason would be low transmission fluid. However Ford decided that us mere mortals can no longer use a dipstick to check the fluid level on some models. Instead you have to take it to a shop, they use a scan tool to check the fluid temperature and connect to a port on the bottom of the transmission to check the level.
Next reasons would depend on which transmission you have and which gears work or does not work and when it slips.
For those could you please tell me if you have a two or four wheel drive?
What size engine? (If you're unsure the size would be on the sticker on the radiator support under the hood).
And lastly here is how you check the fluid level which is probably the problem. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.
