When first pulling away my SUV feels like the transmission is slipping a little and the engine tries to miss. It almost feels like it is trying to pull out in second gear.

After it gets pulled out it runs and pulls perfect. No slip, no miss. No miss at all when idling either. Engine runs great. Just started doing all this today.

A filter and transmission oil change will not go astray if it has not been done in a long time, this will also give you the opportunity to check for debris in the pan, a scan may also through some light on to this one. I would scan for trans codes these guides can help us fix it.

Please run down these guides and report back.

I'm having to manually pull the shifter down into low gear when I come to a stop or when pulling out initially. What does this sound like to you and what would be the easiest, cheapest fix for this problem?

If it is not down shifting, it will probably be a shift valve problem, this really need to be look at by a qualified trans mechanic as there may be other problems as well.

When you start the car it will move about 10 feet then just stop like the tranny slipped out of gear, if you restart the car after a few minutes it will be able to move agian for a few feet but that is the only way to get it mobile agian after it slips

You need to start by checking the fluid level. If the level is OK, check it for color and odor. It should be a clear pink to red color, and should smell oily, but not burned or "varnishy." After that, you may need internal transmission repair but we should service it first this video will help us.

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

I love my 1997 Ford Explorer but something is wrong with it. We had the transmission replaced about 9 months ago. It costs us $1000 (friend price). The "new" transmission had 40,000 miles on it but the transmission hesitates when it is put in gear and it slips intermittantly. I have to let it "warm up" before I can drive it. I can come to a stop at a light and when the light changes and it is time to go, it sometimes will slip and then "kick" in to gear before it will go forward. It worries me. Body is in great condition and only 125,500 miles on it but I've been laid off now for a year so I cannot afford to replace the transmission again. I read something about a vacuum modulator valve or 4WD actuator. Could either of these be the problem? I also received a recall letter from Ford about a "speed control deactivation switch". Would have anything to do with it? I don't know what any of these are but can you help please.

First, the trans doesn't use a vacuum modulator. Much older vehicles did. As far as the speed control deactivation device, it wouldn't cause the problem. However, it can cause a fire (while the car is off and parked in the garage) so I recommend having that taken care of ASAP. The 4wd actuator wouldn't cause it either. It is only activated when you require 4wd.

Now, is the trans full? Is the fluid clean? Have you had it serviced?

Let me know.
Joe

Joe,
Thank you for your response to my question. As I mentioned previously we had the transmission replaced 9 months ago along with new fluid, and whatever else is done when a transmission is replaced. Granted the "new" transmission was a used but it only had 40,000 miles on it. Since we had it replaced we have not had it serviced. Should it need serviced? My husband does check the fluid and it is always full. I do not drive the Explorer much since I am unemployed. In fact, I have only driven about 1000 miles in the last 9 months, maybe. It has been slipping like I described since we had the transmission replaced and at first we thought there may be air in the lines and that it might stop after a little while but it hasn't. Any ideas what it could be? Thank you for the tip on the speed control deactivation device.I plan on getting that looked at asap.
Thank you,
Doris

1998 Explorer 4 Door v6 XLT 168K. I have 31" tires on this truck. Once in a while it used to pop out of gear it seemed when it was cold. I would just let the idle come down and then it would pop in and be ok. Now, if I put it in drive, it will go barely if I feather the gas, it will then start moving, and once it gets rolling 5 or 10 mph, I will back off it and it will lock up and a way we go. Same thing in reverse. However, If I shift to 1, and manually shift my way up, it runs like a top. When I am at highway speed, if I engage the OD, it slides in a little slow, but I can accelerate slowly (without getting it to downshift) in every gear. It sounded like a pressure issue to me. I have been driving it like this for about 500 miles. I did change the fluid and filter 5000 miles ago, and now added some Lucas Tans fix to it (white bottle). I will have a garage do it, whatever it is, just was curious what kind of money we are talking.

You can't second guess these problems, you need to get the transmission assessed by a dealer or a qualified trans tech, autos are very complex and any number of problems may be present, its a waste of time and money throwing parts at it hoping that that is the problem, get it diagnosed first and get a quote for any repairs and shop around don't take the first price either.

Is the fluid full? Is this the original transmission? If so, he front pump or torque converter may be bad. At an idle, the pressure drops. If one is weak because of mileage, it may slip out of gear.

Let me know.

It sounds like one of two things.
1. Is there a cable that runs from the throttle plate down to the trans?
2. You could have a bad govner.
3. Can you manualy shift all the gears ok. If so have the govner checked.
When as last time trans was serviced it should be done at least every 30,000 miles.
Sometimes on thoes it not always the transmission fault I have seen some of them be a transfercase problem. Cause that is a fulltime 4x4 when you turn the switch inside it is just taking it out of auto into hi or low range. If you have checked all these other things. I have talked about check it out. And also you didn't say how many miles was on the truck or if the fluid was full or not.(NOS)

Transmission problem 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 179, 00 miles

This car is for my 16 year old son. The transmission has a hard time changing gears. You have to take your foot off the gas at 25 miles per hour so it will go into the next gear. Is it the tansmission going out due to age or is there something else we can do.

I know this doesnt help you much, but I have an '01 Explorer Sport purchased used w/about 120K miles on it. It does the same thing, I have to let off the gas for it to shift, and if I dont, it will rev up really high and slam into gear jerking the car. Im not sure what is the cause, my guess is the transmission going out, but I know that sometimes when it happens my O/D light will start to flash on and off until I turn my car off. Maybe it has to do with the over drive unit. Im curious what the answer to this issue is as well.

We own a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT, automatic with 66k miles on it and justabout 1 year ago we had the same symptoms. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd was slow and required high revs and when it did shift it was with a very audible THUNK and the SUV would jolt forward. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd was a little slow but smooth. I checked the tranmsmission fluid immediately and it smelled smokey and had black streaks in it. Had it towed to a repair shop and the verdict was a burned up transmission. Come to find out, Ford transmissions were pure crap from mid 90's through early 2000. I did an internet search and saw plenty of forums with posts from people complaining of the same crappy Ford automatic transmissions. Luckedly we had an extended warranty and after ONLY $700 for the deductable we got a brand new transmission. Been running great since then.

I recommend checking the tranny fluid. If it smells smokey or has black streaks in it, then have it towed and expect about $2.5k for a new tranny.

These trucks had a problem with clogging the cat converter which makes the transmission shift way late and when you let you foot off the gas. Check this guide to confirm the issue.

Please let us know what you find.
