HI there,

If this was a re-co transmission take it back to the repairer, if second hand, bet get a transmission specialist to test and report on it, there will be a few tests that will have to be done to determine the cause of this problem.

Has the check engine light come on? It sounds like a bad shift solenoid.

Let me know.

WHat I would like for you to do is take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most will do it for free, and it could tell us what is wrong with the transmission.

Do that and let me know what you find.

Engine problem
1993 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 100K miles

I have a 93 ford explorer with a rebuilt engine, the engine has 100 k miles. I started the truck in the morning. It was very cold outside. I started it and it turned over and immediately made a popping noise and died. After it died I could smell a weird smell almost like a strong exhaust smell. Since that morning my truck has been making a hissing noise coming from the engine sounding like a vacuum leak, when I start the truck it idles high and when shift into gear it jerks very hard, it also runs rough when it trims down to an idle and dies. While driving I also notice that it runs like the transmission is slipping, it feels like it is constantly having to catch up to go in gear causing the truck to jerk. All this happened after starting my truck that morning. I am stumped on where to start and how to fix the problem. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Start by checking the transmission fluid level. Next there is a vacuum port where a bunch of vacuum lines connect near the rear of the engine. One of the lines popped off. Find it and put it back on. Use a zip tie to secure it. If transmission fluid is low you could have a bad transmission modulator valve that is causing all your problems.

I don't know if it was supposed to fix all my problems but I did exactly what you said and found the missing hose, reconnected it and EVERYTHING runs great. Thanks a million for the quick response and your help.

I have the same problem, one of the vacuum lines is popped off, the only problem is I can not find that line anywhere. The open port is one of the 2 that faces the firewall, and it is the closest one to the brake booster. Where should the other end of that line go so maybe I can trace it back and find the end so I can plug it back in.

Thanks,
Jason

The first thing to check is the fluid level. For an automatic transmission to function normally, the fluid level must be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick. If the fluid level is low, the transmission may slip or engage slowly. If the level is too high, the fluid can become mixed with air (aerated) causing shifting problems, slippage and noise.
Check the level when the transmission is hot. On most vehicles this is done with the engine idling and the transmission in Park. Moving the gear selector thorough each gear position prior to checking the level will help assure an accurate reading.
If the transmission fluid never had been changed, it is time to do it.
Let me know how far you have come

Hi Jeff,

When was your last tranny service, filter and fluid change? Have you added fluid since leak has started? When checking fluid is it a brownish color?

Ok, first thing I would do since it only slips accassionally, is to change the filter and fluid. You could have a partially clogged filter. Post results.
