Without even searching for the one, or many, that may interchange, I will say this:

I am a firm believer in "ya stick with what ya got" (major components). The cost, time, added parts, down time, etc, with replacing it with a 'supposed to be' good part can be more $$ than rebuilding what ya have. Especially if the replacement is even worse! Then ya get to pay for everything twice (it's happened to me).

Check around on someone doing a Remove/Rebuild/Replace (and what their warranty is), 'vs' you (or have someone else) remove it and a shop does a 'bench build' (what is their warranty) and then it's reinstalled (Ya might want to go through the motor too?).

2CarPros will be glad to search the idiosyncrasies of what would interchange. Just being realistic. And maybe save ya money in the long run.

Okay, I understand what you're trying to tell me, but let me rephrase the question, is there a stamp or marking on my existing transmission that will identify what transmission to buy, or by going with my VIN can I check? How, is all i'm asking, not the should or should not.

Okay. Understand.

Open the driver's side door and find the white card on the side of the door that is filled with small black lettering. This card contains specific details about the year the car was made, its transmission, engine specifications and other details. Underneath or beside the “TR” symbol will be a number code. Call your local dealership service department or auto parts retailer to inquire about the transmission related to that number. The VIN number would help too. With both numbers and you should be able to determine what trans you have.

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different vehicles: a Legacy-based station wagon, the Outback (1994 present), and an Impreza-derived hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994 2011). So, your options open up that doesn't have to be an "Outback" specifically.

Good Luck.

Glenn

Edit add on: I came back to this because I found out there should be an ID tag on the trans bellhousing. It should read 'something' like this -- TY752VB4AA. That number is specific to 'your' transmission and could be in several different models.

It's been a while since last contact. Did you find the numbers needed to identify your transmission?

Yes Glenn, sorry, been hectic here. We were able to locate identification of transmission. Got a guy interested in rebuilding this one for $350.00, much cheaper way to go. He's done work for others in the area and comes highly recommended Thanks for checking back. Till next time

Kewl! It appears all is well. I never got into doing trans rebuilding. They are very tedious and there are many-many internal parts to keep track of and to 'absolutely' keep in the proper order and in proper place. Seen it done, but never did it myself.

Be Well, and be Safe. Glenn
