Our Sienna periodically belches white smoke at startup. But not at every start; it may go several days without smoking, and then emit a small puff, then the next day will emit a large cloud. If it smokes it generally does so only once on a given day, even if we start the car several times. I add oil once a week or so just to maintain the level.

Our mechanic, who we trust, performed a compression check but says he can't fiind "the " source of the problem. We feel we have to sell the car, and are concerned that it is now worth essentially nothing unless we can get it repaired.

Any experience with this problem and its resolution? Note that the car has only 57.5K miles on it, and has been well-maintained.

Hi jerrylink,

Thank you for the donation.

Such problems are caused by the valve stem seals. They go bad over age as the seals tends to harden and not providing sufficient sealing.

When engine is left sitting, oil would leak into the intake and exhaust ports via the hardened seals and when engine is started, the oil would be burnt and sent out as smoke if the quantity is substantial. After running the engine, it would not would not produce smoke all the time, only sporadically.

Heh.

My problem was apparently shared by a lot of other Toyota and Lexus owners.

Toyota had to settle a class action suit, which is laid forth

Don't let your dealer BS you.

Go in and demand that they fix your car. If they try to stiff you, appeal.

(and when you do, make sure you hit EVERY other local resource, including Better Business Bureau, your local AG's consumer affairs office, local TV stations, etc. Make them have to answer numerous inquries from many fronts.)

It's THEIR problem, not yours.
