I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. 2.7 liter engine. 5 speed. It currently gets about 15mpg. The exhaust is extremely sooty. It does not have a check engine code. It doesnt idle rough. It just gets poor mileage. It currently has 127,000 miles on it. I change my oil regularly, changed the plugs, wires, and air filter. I have changed the fuel filter as well.

Could consider changing the oxygen sensor/s and rule out the exhaust system-might be partially clogged in there somewhere that's causing the engine not to breathe properly.

In automotive we call it Volumetric Efficiency. It's how well the engine breathes. Inhale and exhale
