Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Automatic 110000 miles

My 1995 Corolla died on me on the road a few minutes after turning on the car. The car seemed like to just lose power all of a sudden as I was driving & gradually came to a halt. Now, the car will crank up, but will not start at all. I tried changing out the battery with a brand new one, but still no luck.

Before this happened, the only things that came to my attention was that every once & awhile (I would say 3 times out of a year)the car would not start, but I would just disconnect the battery & reconnect it & the car would start up. Also, when the engine is on idle, it would make a rattling noise. Other then those 2 things, the car ran fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

I would check the usual, fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge, and test for spark, but the fact that it would start after disconnecting the battery, would lead me to the an ECM problem, since disconnecting the battery resets the ECM.

Check your timing belt and have the ignition module tested (ignitor). The timing belt should be changed every 70K.

The rattling sounds like the ECM is adding too much advance to the timing. Have the ECM scanned to see what degrees of advance it is commanding.

Thank you for the information.

I actually just bought an adjustable ignition spark tester & tested it that way. I connected an ignition wire to the spark plug looking end and then grounded the other end. I did not see any spark at all as I tested each ignition wire. It continues to crank, but still will not start.
