Engine Performance problem
2002 Toyota Celica 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 75K miles

I ran into a parking lot, parking block and damaged my car. Both tires blew out and bent one of the rims. Thats the easy part though. I damaged the oil pan. It is caved in pretty good and I didn't notice it until the next day. (I was able to drive the car after the accident on spares) The engine sounds normal but I am afraid it caved in too far and possibly hit the oil pump or other engine components. I am not sure of the clearance in there and I can't find a Chilton for my car to check myself. I just need to know what damage I might have caused and is changing out the oil pan on my Celica a DIY job or not. Please help

Hi bryan81,

In the oil pan there is only the oil strainer and no other parts that can be damaged. If the pan is damaged too badly, it can restrict the oil strainer and cause inefficient lubrications at high engine speed.

DIY is possible but a rather messy job.

Any advice or tips for when I change it out? Also I called a shop and they quoted my $178 in labor. I would hate to pay that when I could just do it myself. I know I have to clean off the old oil and make sure the seating area is clean before placing the new gasket. All the bolts seem easily accessible as well.

The job is not too bad, just messy.

There is nothing special with the work except to remove anything that might obstruct the removal and reinstallation.

The book time for replacement is 2.6 hours and the price quoted is reasonable.

Most important item to note would be the tightening torque for the oil pan bolts. Over tightening might damage the gasket.
Refer to previous diagrm for the tightening torque.
