Well I feel that it is time for a re-co trans, best to get the complete trans done and don't settle for a patch up repair.

Would be best if you rang around and got a for quotes on a change over unit including the torque converter, it will not be cheap, bet to get a few quotes and compare priced in your town, as I am in Australia my pricing will be of no value and any on line prices will be the same as yours, ring local and see what you come up with.

AAMCO is a company that a few of the other moderators have suggested to use in there posts, you will always get a few complaints fromr people no matter how hard you try, maybe ask a few workshops which they prefer to use, you may get a better idea as who to go to that way.

I had AALL tech trans take a look at it and they said there is nothing wrong that they can tell, they weren't even able to get it to grind.

But they did say my ATF is purple and that means something is wrong?
The guy there had all these awards on the wall for best service n shit, but the guy wouldn't tell me anything. He even half ass answered my questions.

I cannot find anything on the web about ATF turning purple

Is the oil purple? Maybe there is a wrong oil fitted? All auto oil is red, this is getting stranger by the post, I would get a second opinion on the oil.

What he told me was that its either supose to be red or brown. If its purples that means there is suspended aluminum in the oil and it would be a good idea to rip apart the trans the investigate. He quoted me 400$ to "investigate" I think he wanted to grab my cash.

Ive spoken with other mechanics and even my local dealer. No one says what he told me.

Get outa there and go find a new workshop, I feel that this bloke is more interested in his back pocket than your car. Dark oil is a sign of transmission slipping, a good trans shop will be able to do a test and report and offer an estimate before any serious work is undertaken, with the trans pulled down then they will be able to do a firm quote, otherwise look for a complete change over trans, you should be able to get a firm supply and fit price for this.

Does a replacement/rebuild generaly come with a rebuilt torque converter as well? Or new. Or is that normally an addition cost.

I've been quoted 1800$ For a complete overhaul

I've been told I should contact people who only use OEM replacement kits and Toyota ATF as the aftermarket stuff isn't nearly as well produced. Price of a trans online from toyota is 2800$ + 1000$ core

The transmission should come with a converter, it will be part of the package, my transmission builder uses after market with out any problems, but then there are different quality after market as well, you get what you pay for in this industry, quality costs, so a cheap price is not always a bargain.
