What is the color of the smoke and where is it coming from. Be more specific.

Could be a blown headgasket or blown headTry replacing the thermostat-not it do the following below:

Have it block and pressure tested-do the block first to pinpoint a combustion leaking into the cooling system or a gas analyzer to sniff for hydrocarbons at the radiator fill neck.

Pressure test: do not do a pressure test if there's leakage at the headgasket this might cause coolant into the cylinders and lock it up or bend a connecting rod if cranked thereafter. The headgasket should be repaired before doing the pressure test.

If the block and pressure test passes check the following: Thermostat,Pressure test the Rad. cap,Clogged radiator,Fan clutch,Radiator electrical fan, collaspe hoses, water pump.-you're burning the coolant.

I am having a similar problem with a 91' Toyota Hilux Surf. I've had it checked out and pressure tested etc by a Toyota garage, but they can't find anything wrong with it!

I am undertaking a very long trip in this vehicle shortly, but am worried it might blow smoke again!

Is there anything anyone knows of which would cause *intermittent* white smoke (tons of it) from the exhaust pipe?

I had only just bought it when it happened, but it looked like the coolant levels were overly low afterwards, but having not checked before driving it away I'm not 100% sure annoyingly!!

Could a head gasket blow intermittently? (The vehicle had been doing 90mph down a motorway for about 45 mins before the prob occured. Had it shipped to Toyota garage three days later, they test drove it but could not see fault. They (say) they carried out all appropriate tests but found nothing.)

If anyone has any idea as to what may have gone on, please let me know!

Cheers

Have it block and pressure test this will tell you something-check every small hoses attached to the radiator for restriction.
