Steering wheel shake at 70 mph

I just purchased this car, so I don't have any background information to give you. Unfortunately, we also didn't notice this problem when we purchased it!

The steering wheel begins shaking slightly back and forth at around 70 mph, but not on all pavement. Sometimes there is no shaking at all and then a few miles down the road the shaking will begin. This will go on for a little ways and then seems to stop again. It seems as if certain pavement cause the problem to show (it may still be there, but so slight we aren't noticing on other pavement). At this point, this is not a severe shake, but annoying. If you slow down, the shaking goes away.

There are a number of things that can cause this, so we need to start with this guide and find out if any of this matches, but I imagine we are dealing with tire issues:

The next thing to do is check for tear wear issues. This guide will help with this, but this will not only point to a tire issue but an alignment issue as well:

If this turns nothing up, then we need to simply have the tires balanced.
