Transmission problem
1997 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Car will not start battery good tested starter and it was good, got ready to tow it jumped in to put in neutral and pressed brake would not go into neutral, hooked up battery and then the shifter moved but it stayed in gear. So is the linkage broke and it is actually stuck in drive or reverse, the light says park and does not change. So of course 3 or 4 guys surrounded and came up with maybe a broke linkage and that was why it would not start in the first place, or someone said solenoid? Any assistance would greatly be appreciated. Starter is in back seat not installed battery charged and lights come on. Thanks again

Hi there,

You will see if the cable is faulty as the transmission selector is very visible at the front /top section of the transmission, it is the only large cable going to the transmission there is a switch there as well. You wont tow start this auto, so you will have to re fit the starter and make sure that it is working.

I will check the cable, what does the switch do? So I will need to put the starter back in?

The switch is the transmission isolator switch, this stops the engine form starting in gear. Fit the starter and check the cable.
