Hi there!
Would it make sense that the problem could be the MAP sensor?
I have the car at a friends house and I have taken it out the last 4 days and there was no problems, until today I brought the car to work and it stalled! My friend has a diagnostic machine and he did see something about MAP sensor but we don't know if that was an older problem! Because they are somewhat expensive I wanted to be sure that we change the right parts! Is it possible for me to use a used Map sensor?
Thanks for your time!

Mike

Hi, I installed new MAP sensor and was driving home from a friends house and it stalled! Got it restarted and it was fine for the rest of the 20 min. Drive! I don't know where to look next! Could it be an intermitting ignition coil problem?

Thanks
Mike

Hi vwmike72,

Did the engine stall while driving or when you slowed down or stopped?

Is the Check engine light showing?
What is the idling rpm when engine is at operating temp? With AC on?

Sunday evening when I was driving home I came to the first light and car stalled while stopped! The engine wasn't even up to temp yet! The check engine light is not on and it has never come on throughout this problem! Car idles at 700-750 rpms with the A/C on! I have driven it everywhere since then and it has been perfect and it is late tuesday evening now! It is so intermitant that I can't really take it anywhere because chances are it won't act up! Since installing MAP sensor it seems to run alot better except for that one stall at traffic light!

Hi vwmike72,

The idling speed is normal but you seem to stall only at stops so you need to check the idling system. Is the idling erractic when the AC cuts in and out?

If yes and you had not cleaned the throttle body and IAC before, I would suggest cleaning it to get the idling speed stable. Use of carb cleaner is good enough.

Was resetting done for the ECM after installation of the MAP?

The ECM needs relearning to a certain extent so the stalling might have happened before it had fully relearnt itself. The problem might just go away after some driving.

Next time it refuses to start don't wait for it to make up its mind-do below immediately to determine if its fuel or spark problem

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if okay-check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing

Thank you very, very much for all of your help, I've driven the car all week and haven't had any problems whatsoever since that one incident when I first installed MAP sensor. I'm hoping it did relearn itself and hope everything will be ok now!
Once again I appreciate very much the help and suggestions that you have given me!

I'll keep you posted!
Thanks again,

Mike

I am driving along or having it parked in my drive way, and all of a sudden the battery light, engine light or just all the lights come on. The car loses power and slowly comes to a stop or just shuts off. I try to start the car and the battery is giving the car power, but just would not start. I have replaced the Fuel Pump, Fuel filter, distributor, Distributor cap, wire and spark plugs.

I noticed that the car was running in a jerky manner about 5 days ago. I tried sitting and running the car for about 20 minutes since I haven't been driving the car alot recently. I live in New York City. When I went to move the car two days ago, it stalled several times at the light, so I tried running it in park while I waited for the light to change. Today it was even worse; it stalled and died as I was crossing the intersection! Fortunately I was able to make it to a parking space at the curb, altho the engine had died. I think I was able to start it again, but I figure I will probably have to have it towed for repair. I changed the battery about two months ago, so it is not that. What is causing the stalls? Is something blocking the engine from getting gas? Thank you.

HI there.

I would be checking the fuel pressure and getting a scan done for any set fault codes, these also have a problem with stick air flow meters in the air box at the air filter.

My car appeared to run out of gas, I put a gallon of gas in it started up ran a few minutes and dyed again.
I then thought maybe I ran the gas far beyond the limit and got another gallon of gas. It started up after a few moments of spitting and sputtering. It sounded normal. I took off and a few minutes later it dyed again. What do you think my problem is? Thanks.

Hi Toyotawoman,

There are a 1001 reasons for it to happen so more info is needed for us to help you.

After the last time, did it start again?

Is the vehicle on level ground when the engine cut off?

2 gallons of fuel would be enough if the vehicle is on level ground but if it is slanting at more than 20 degrees, it might not be enough.

Thanks for your quick repsonse. The car was on level ground. And I too thought 2 gallons was plenty. With the initial first gallon it just drove for less then 2 mintues and dyed. Then after the second gallon, it sputtered and started for a second time and once again only lasted for a few minutes. Do I have a fuse that I should check for the fuel pump? Or do you think the fuel pump itself is clogged and needs to be replaced? Or am I just grabbing at the wrong ideas? Thanks.

Hi Toyotawoman,

You need to check and confirm if it is the fuel or others that might be the cause.

Hi there,

You may have a faulty cold start injector, get this inspected as it is an aid to cold starts, if it starts ok warm, go here first.
