Looking for spark-disconnect a sparkplug wire and have helper crank engine over-do you have spark? For fuel you need to check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.

My '92 Camry has been intermittently stalling at stop signs, red light, in stop and go traffic. When it is started cold, it starts strong, idle is a bit high, then drives relatively normal until the car is warmed up. Once warm, engine will intermittently sputter/stall when stopped. The idle will sit at 800, then sometimes drop lower and stall or sputter.

Today is stalled on the highway in traffic. It would crank but not turn over for about 5-10 minutes (trying every minute or so). It finally started, I kept the RPM's up by slightly hitting gas with my foot on the brake to get through traffic. When I got home, the car sat outside my house for 10-15 minutes running with no problem at all.

Mechanics cannot seem to replicate the problem, but checked my vacuum lines, air intake hose, egr valve, cleaned throttle body, no codes are being thrown. They tell me all of the above seem okay.

The two problems that seem to share the most similarities that I have found on forums are the ECT sensor going bad, and the coil inside the distributor (although my distributor was replaced about 18 months ago?).

Any thoughts? This has been going on for months, and nobody seems to have any clue. Please help

Does this only occur at idle? The aToyota Idle Air Control valves are prone to sticking due to their design and can cause what you describe. Otherwise you will need to test for spark and fuel pressure when it wont start to see what is missing

It has never stalled while in motion, but it will act up a little at speed if I'm in traffic. Sometimes if I'm going 20-30, if I let my foot off the gas, RPM wiill jump up a little on its own, then drop back down. It never has a problem starting except for the one time immediately after it stalled. Seemed like the engine was just flooded? So you don't think it would be the ECT sensor, EGR valve, etc?

I'm just trying to get a better idea before springing 300-400 for the IACV.

Thanks

I have had fairly good luck removing the IACV and cleaning it out with carb cleaner and a soft brush. Let it soak so as to break loose the carbon. Have even carefully used a small flat blade screwdriver to scrape it clean internally. If you try this and get some kind of change out of it, you will at least know you are headed in the right direction. Especially since it only seems to do it at closed throttle times. ECTs usually fail no matter what the engine rpm is. As far as EGR foes, you could try unhooking the vacuum line to the valve and see if it fixes it. Toyotas usually have a problem with EGR working though, not really sticking on

I hit a large pothole with the passenger front wheel and since then it stalls when I come to a stop and when I restart it, it runs very rough and wont stay running unless I give it alot of gas.

Hi tmayer217, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation.

Lets start by cleaning out the idle air control valve and EGR valve and then test the throttle position sensor and airflow meter-

My distributor, cap, rotor, wires, plugs and air hose were all stolen off my Toyota Camry. A "shade-tree" mechanic replaced all the parts except the hose, but the first time I drove it all the dash lights came on and it stalled. I tried to restart it about 5 times and it cranked but wouldn't turn over. It sat for 20 min waiting for him to show up and when he did it started right up. It didn't do it again for about 3 weeks, then it was daily for 3 days, then every time I drove it. The last time I repeated the process (try to start at least five times and sit for 20 min) it wouldn't start, and the second time I turned the key it made that grinding noise that a car makes when you try to start it and it's already on. I waited another 20 min, it started, I drove it home and parked it. A different person suggested that it might be the fuel pump so I replaced that. It idled for 1 1/2 hrs, then cut off as soon as I put it in drive and made the grinding sound after I tried to start it the third time. Is this a fixable problem and if so how?

From your description does itnot turn over or does it just quit running? Have your battery checked first auto parts do it for free. Check fuel pressure it should be 38-44 psi. To check place a j;umper wire between engine check terminals B+ to FP. Then get the hose replaced that goes to throttle body from air cleaner as that may be the real culprit here.

I have the very same problem with my 1990 camry. I have spent 10 hours on it. Filter ok, fuel pressure at filter ok, next step is to check resistance across each injector as described in haynes repair manualwith ohm meter.(Air flow meter electrical plug is attached to your air filter housing) Keep trying and good luck. My question is in forum (90 camry stalls) still unanswered. Keep in touch, DESPERATE, AYLMER, Quebec!

1992 toyota carmy won't start. No current, no lights, radio will not play, but battery is fully charged. The only way I can start it is to have it jumped with another vehicle. When I jump it, it miss for a brief moment. But soon as I take the battery charger off, it will stop running.

I have a 1992 camry. The car runs great but will die out after 10 minutes of driving. It does not sputter or run rough when dieing out, it just cuts off. It does start right back up and may not die out for a while. I have noticed that it usually dies out when I am making a turn. What could cause this?

You probably have a wire harness rubbing on some part of the engine. With the engine idling wiggle the wiring harness to see if you can make it stall. Then look for cut wires.

Why does my idle hand move when I'm not moving and feel vibration when the car is not moving? When I come to a stop the car will vibrate and then cut off, but it have no problem coming back on.

Consider a tune-up if it has been done a long time, also clean out the idle air control valve and EGR valve and test the throttle position sensor and airflow meter
