Electrical problem
1992 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Automatic

My battery light on the dash was flashing on and off for about a week or so then it came on permanently, then the car started to chug and not drive with usual power. Then finally it stopped going whilst driving, almost like running out of petrol it slowly chugged chugged til it konked out. Some People told me it was the regulator on the alternator. So I bought a new regulator from repco and took old one out and put new one in. Tried to start the car with no success. It makes a tick tick noise and I thought I may have put regulator in wrongly so I took it out and put it back again. Have repeated this a couple more times to be sure but cant seem to put it in any other way. Do I need the car battery recharged before car will start or what am I doing wrong? Thank you so much for your help. If I wasnt a single mother with a two year old and no job at present I would donate some money but I have nothing myself. Sorry but much appreciate your help.

If you can do that -Get a voltmeter read the battery voltage before you start the car record it should read 12.4 or better. Now start the car up read the voltage again should read 14.20 volts or better if the alternator is working if it still reads battery voltage before you start it and a new regulator in place the alternator itself is defective but double check wiring connector on back of the alternator
