Urgent request. I have a '91 Toyota Camry (AT)in good condition, but someone burned out the clutch in reverse during the winter. One mechanic says he found a transmission for $400. Is that realistic? Please, fill me in on how to get a used Auto-Transmission

I also have brake lights that wont turn on. I switched the fuses, and the bulbs work (when I turn on the Headlights) but they won't come on when I press the brakes. What could be wrong with it & should I do at this point?

Hi JP_NYC,

Thank you for the donation.

$400 for a used transmission should be a good price but make sure they provide you with a warranty for it. When buying used transmission, there is not much that you can check or find out so it mostly depends on your luck.

The only thing that you can check would be the transmission fluid, ensure it is not dark brown or smells burnt. Red trans fluid would be the one to look for.

As to the brake lights, the taillight and brakes are 2 separate circuit in the same bulb. The taillight might work with the brakes not working due to a bad bulb.
If the high mount brake light is not working, check the brake switch at the pedal.
