I purchased the car listed above as is earlier this year. After a short while the car started burning oil.I was told to start looking for a replacement engine. We purchased a replacement and had it installed.97 percent of the time the engine run good, the other time it makes a knocking noise when idling after a drive. The mechanic who replaced the engine told me to just drive it. My Toyota dealer wants to tear the motor apart they say it is internal.I do not want to make any more mistakes. I am over in money what the car is worth.I will appreciate anything you can tell me.

Yeah. That is a lower engine knock and I am surprised that someone told you to keep driving that. If you keep driving it then most likely you will have a major failure and need to replace it again. I would agree with the dealer who said this is internal and would need to tear it apart to find the issue.

Sorry but I imagine this will require another engine replacement. Clearly they could tear it apart and find the issue but either way this is an engine knocking and it is internal. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

The car only sounds like this about 3 percent of the time. If it is turned off and restarted it runs normal, has all kinds of power. If it is a lower engine problem why does it not happen all the time? Could it be that something is just loose?

I would check the oil pressure, possibly leaving the gauge attached then go on a drive to try and duplicate it. Maybe there is an oil pressure drop due to a partial blockage at the oil pickup screen, anything is possible and I've seen some crazy stuff in my 27 years of turning a wrench.

Great point. If it is that infrequent then I suspect there is something floating around the oil. If nothing else drop the oil pan and see if there is something there that can block the pick up tube. You will know this by verifying oil pressure is low as bmdouble says when the issue is happening.
