Okay, so my son added oil to my car and forgot to put on the oil cap. I added another quart. It ended up being to much oil on the dipstick by just a little bit. I went to the car wash and sprayed the engine compartment off with the car running still. Also sprayed my driver's floor board a little bit. Now my check engine and reduced power light are on and the car will start okay then after about half a block or so the RPMs completely drop and it won't go but the car is still idling. Anybody got any ideas?

On this vehicle, there is an electronic accelerator pedal position sensor. I suspect it was damaged if you sprayed water in the vehicle (driver's side floor).

If you haven't already, I would scan the computer to see if a code is present related to the APP sensor. Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own one, but oftentimes a parts store will do it free of charge or lend a scan tool to you.

Other than that, we need to test the electronic throttle control system. I attached the flow chart below for testing.

If you determine the APP sensor is the problem, starting with pic 6 below are the directions for removal and replacement.

It makes sense that if it was damaged by water that the engine will remain at an idle simply because it is no longer getting a signal from the sensor.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
