Car not that old, is it likely due to engine misfire or engine overheating and is this a sign of a problem car that not worth repairing or a typical problem? Also, do the head bolts need replaced with gasket or can you reuse preexisting bolts if in good shape?

Replace the head bolts and you have to make sure that there is not a mark on the head surface, as Subaru use a metal gasket and small scratch or make may cause the same problem. Use the Subaru coolant and replace the thermostat and have the radiator flow tested.
