If the check engine light was staying on when it runs, the first thing you need to do is check for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will lend or rent one to you. If the light was on, you really need to check for codes.
Now, based on your description, it sounds like it could be a fuel related issue. If you are unable to rev the engine to keep it running, that is what I would suggest checking first.

Here are the manufacturer's specs for pressure.
Fuel Pressure (Key ON, Engine OFF) .................... 379-427 kPa (55-62 psi)
