Starting problem

When I start my VW polo up it fires up then dies within a second. This usually happens 4 or 5 times (sometimes more) before it eventually starts. However it doesn't do it all the time, some days it fires up strait away. I have recently had new spark plugs, cam belt and water pump so now have no idea as to what It could be. Any advice as to what it could be would be much appreciated, thank you.

Could be a number of things. You need to rule-out items one by one, but will be difficult as you can only rule something out when the
problem actually exists.

- Coolant Temperature sensor
- fuel pressure
- ignition (even though it starts, ignition is good, ignition could cut out causing the engine to die)
- crankshaft position sensor
- ECM relay

Depending on the engine and the type of fuel injection system, different ways of checking are involved.

I would be checking fuel pressure first, you will have to start somewhere and best get this checked if only to rule it out as a problem.
