When this happens, does it start right back up for you? Also, is the check engine light staying on?
The idea that it shuts off as you described can be a couple of things. First, you could have low fuel pressure or even a faulty crankshaft position sensor.
If the vehicle doesn't start right back up and you have to wait, see if it starts with starting fluid and then stalls. If it does, then we know its fuel related. If starting fluid doesn't change anything, check for spark to the spark plugs. Here is a link that explains how it's done:
