Trying to change spark plugs but I cannot get the plug wires/protectors off. I have twisted (1) plug wire into. Could you please tell me how to get them off of the spark plugs? Thanks, Carla Reed

Hi Carla and thanks for using 2CarPros.

You are doing it right. Twist the rubber boot about a half turn to break it loose and then pull. They can be a pain and very hard to remove. However, that is how it is done.

Here are the specific directions for your vehicle. If you are replacing the wires, make sure you get the right ones. See the notes in the directions.

PROCEDURES

i
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
1.1. Twist the spark plug wire boot a 1/2 turn.
1.2. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the spark plug.

2. Remove the spark plug wire from the ignition coil.
2.1. Twist the spark plug wire boot a 1/2 turn.
2.2. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.

Spark Plug Wire Length V8

***** 3. There are 2 different manufacturers for the spark plug wire, ignition coils and coil brackets. They are as follows:

IMPORTANT: The Melco(r) spark plug wires MUST be used only with the Melco(r) coils and bracket, like wise the Delphi(r) spark plug wires MUST be used only with Delphi(r) coils and bracket. The components are NOT interchangeable.

4. The Melco(r) spark plug wire (1) will have a blue foil mark on it, and the wire is 145 mm (5.70 in) in length from cable seal to cable seal.
5. The Delphi(r) spark plug wire (2) will have a white foil mark on it, and the wire is 110 mm (4.30 in) in length cable seal to cable seal.

Ignition Coils

6. The Melco(r) (1) ignition coil is a square design.
7. The Delphi(r) (2) ignition coil is a round design.
8. The Melco(r) ignition coil bracket (1) is a square design.
9. The Delphi(r) ignition coil bracket (2) is a round design.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the spark plug wire to the ignition coil.
2. Install the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
3. Inspect the spark plug wire for proper installation:
3.1. Push sideways on each boot in order to inspect the seating.
3.2. Reinstall any loose boot.

Thanks so much, got them changed. Now I have another question. Daughter has 1999 Ford explorer 5.0 liter. Trying to replace a temperature sensor, how is the easiest way to remove the old one. Having problems getting a wrench on it. Also she noticed antifreeze on top of motor today but radiator/reservoir is full.
Thanks,
Carla Reed

Carla:
Welcome back. I am glad you got the plugs taken care of. The wires can be a pain. As far as the next question, I have to ask you to start a new post. I will watch for it and help you when I see it. The owners want to keep each thread specific to one problem. I hope you understand.

Take care and way to go!

Joe
