About a week ago when I shut the car off I noticed smoke coming from the hood and a strong burning rubber smell. I immediately popped the hood and noticed it was coming from the throttle body (or very near it) and that my serpentine belt was extremely cracked and near snapping. We replaced the belt and hoped it would solve the issues (or at least the smell) while doing all this we realized we had no power steering fluid so we filled that up (admittedly over filled it and it spilled). After these few little checks we took it for a test drive, no where far, just around the block enough times to get it warmed up. The smell came back though it was a little less rubber like and more chemical like (we assumed it was just the over filled power steering fluid), but as soon as we stopped the car we noticed the smoke again. Same location.

A few other things I have noticed about this car that I will mention just in case it is related somehow. It does not like to shift to second on its own very often. We can usually get her to shift to third and fourth with no problems. (We assumed we needed a new transmission and we got one but have not put it in yet). Also, our indicator lights in the dash randomly come on and off with no apparent reason. Brake/ABS together. Theft/service together and check engine, oil, and Trac off individually. None of these combinations are ever mixed together and all disappear of we restart the car. We assumed this to be electrical as our stereo also resets itself when using blinkers sometimes.

Any idea what I should check? I hate replacing parts that are not needed just to test if it is broken.

Lets try for the smoke problem in the throttle body first. I have seen either a fuel injector leaking or a leaking head gasket cause this problem. We can find which cylinder is creating the problem if you pull the spark plugs and look for the plug that has different coloring than the rest.

Here is a guide:

If you can take a video of the problem it would help us see whats going on.

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

Well it was too dark after I got off work to do anything with the car, but while I was at work my brother took a look at the car for me and noticed a few things I had not noticed previously. The coolant hose in the front was pushed into the relay fan (which was not kicking on until he jiggled the wire) and he says there is an exhaust leak under the hood beneath the throttle body area. Also, he is pretty sure my oil pan gasket is leaking oil. And also a fluid leak somewhere but he is not sure what fluid just that once it starts smoking (which does not happen at idle, driving around the block will do it tho) he says the smoke smells like plastic? Could any of these be a source of the smoke? From what my brother says he does not think the smoke is related to the throttle body but a leak near it. He did the couple tests to check for head gasket issues (oil is normal colored and not mixing with coolant, no white smoke from exhaust, and no bubbling in the coolant reservoir).

I have seen where a plastic piece or shield of some sort has melted onto the exhaust pipe which would cause the problem you are describing. Can you check out the exhaust manifolds and head pipes for melted plastic?

Sorry for the late reply. As far as I can tell there is no plastic. I've been assured by several people what I'm smelling is burning oil. Problem is I can't find a leak besides from the bad oil pan gasket. While under the car today we discovered a hole the size of a pencil in our transmission pan as well. Haven't checked the tranny fluid level, but I imagine with a hole that big it would be pretty low levels. My landlord is now screeching at the massive stain and run off by the car in the parking lot, but I don't feel comfortable moving it even to the road until I fix the smoking issue. Is the oil gasket leak my smoke culprit do you think?

Ya it could be but I would feel better if we had some pictures of the leak and where it was coming from. Here are a couple of guides to help see what's going on and how to raise the car safely.

and

Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.
