I have to replace the alternator on my f-150 5.4l but I can't get the belt loose, I have a 1/2" strong arm but it won't go into the hole far enough to get a good grip. I even went to the nearest auto store and rented a tool they had (serpatine belt pulley) and they said would work but it won't do the job either. Any suggestions?

The tensioner should move fairly easy. If your is seized and wont move, what I do is break it off then replace it. Or cut the belt then unbolt it and replace it.

Hi, Before Taking Off the Belt Look For a decal On The Hood, Or On Radiator Support. If No Decal, You Can Find A Belt Routeing Picture Here. To Remove Belt. You Need May Need A 3/8 Drive rachet And Small Extension Or A 1/2 Rachet And Extension, Find The Belt Tensioner Put Rachet In Slot, And Pull, One way To Loosen, Pull other way To tighten. TheTensioner Is Spring loaded So Wear gloves, Be careful not to Slip Off. And injure Your Hand. Now Remove Belt. Install New belt As Per Drawing. If No decal.I Draw Picture Of all pulleys And Belt Before removing belt. You May Need To Put a small Pipe On The End Of Your Rachet To Get More Leverage. Some Of those Tensioners Have A Powerful spring.

Hope This Helps You,
Good Luck
Edward S.
