Hi,

A car relay is nothing more than an electrically operated switch that uses an electromagnet to mechanically close or open its contacts. Here’s how it works.

When an electrical current flows through the relay's primary coil, it creates a magnetic field around the coil. This magnetic field attracts an armature or iron core within the relay, causing it to complete the secondary portion of the relay. When the contacts close, they complete the circuit for another electrical component.

As far as testing, here is a link that explains how to check both a relay as well as the relay circuit. Take a look through it and let me know if it helps.

Let me know if that helps.

Take care,
