The first step in some states is to be sure you can get replacements. Because these use an explosive charge like an airbag on the pre-tensioners that hooks into the restraint system some places are a pain about letting the average person buy them, even from a GM dealer. Because of that the prices are ridiculous and it ends up actually being cheaper in many cases to have them replace them.
If the reason for replacement was an accident you will want to check the other belts as well to be sure they did not deploy.

The book warning - Some countries, states or localities may not allow service deployment of airbags without special permission or training. Local laws regarding deploying and scrapping of airbags/devices with pyrotechnics must be followed.

Also, once you can secure the replacements you need to dispose of the old ones properly. My usual method is to return the old ones to a dealer and let them deal with them.

Now if you are not in a nanny state the process starts by disarming the airbag system. This is simple, you remove the negative battery cable and place it so it cannot touch the post, then wait about five minutes before you start working on the belt.

The next steps depend on which cab style you have. They are laid out in the attached images. The first two are regular cab, the next two are extended cap and the last two are the crew cab versions.

Most of the trim snaps in place but it usually has an order to remove it. So once you look things over post back and we can follow up with more detail if needed.

You will need a large Torx bit to remove the bolts that hold the belts in. You will also want to clean the exposed ends of the bolts that go through the floor like the seats and lower belt bolts, plus spray them with some lubricant. They tend to come out hard most times. I will do that a day or two before if possible.
If the units did deploy I recommend you wear rubber gloves during removal. Some people are sensitive to the chemicals used in the charge and it can cause problems.

Front Passenger seat belt locks up whenever passenger leans forward, this is a safety issue since passenger is repeatedly unbuckling and buckling seat belt. We understand this seat belt has a locking mechanism for infant car seats - but since we have no children, is it possible to replace or disable this locking mechanism belt?

Good morning,

There is no way to disable the locking piece at all. That is just the way the system works and was designed to operate that way.

Below is the test for the retractor assembly. Try that test to see if the retractor is bad. I attached the procedure for replacing the retractor as well.

Roy

IMPORTANT: If the vehicle has been in a collision, refer to Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision for additional information.

Perform the following inspection from the driver seat:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Verify proper operation of the seat belt reminder lamp with the belt buckled and with the belt unbuckled.
2. Inspect the shoulder belt guide in order to ensure that the following conditions are met:
The shoulder belt guide swivels freely in the rear seat position.
The seat belt webbing is seated flatly in the guide slot.
The seat belt webbing does not bind.
3. Verify that the seat belt buckle faces inboard and is accessible.
4. Verify that the seat belt retractor units are securely attached.
5. Verify that the seat belt anchor bolts are secure.
6. Fully extend the seat belt webbing. Verify that the seat belt webbing does not have any twists or tears.
7. Allow the seat belt webbing to retract. Verify that the seat belt webbing returns freely and completely back into the retractor.
8. Snap the seat belt latch plate into the buckle.
9. Sharply tug on the seat belt latch plate and the buckle. Verify that the seat belt latch plate and the buckle remain locked when tugged.
10. Push the button on the buckle.
Verify that the seat belt latch plate releases easily from the buckle.
Verify that the button returns to its original position.

Repeat the inspection procedure, steps 2-10, from the front passenger seat.

Test the function of the automatic locking child restraint feature:
1. To engage the automatic locking feature, pull the belt to the fully extended position. Allow the belt to retract to the proper position for the child seat and fasten the latch plate to the buckle. As the belt retracts, a ratcheting sound should be heard.
2. To disengage the automatic locking feature, allow the belt to retract to the fully stowed position. Before the belt is completely stowed, the cinch feature will reset, the ratcheting sound will stop and the belt will extract freely.

Perform the following steps in order to inspect the center seat belts:
1. Verify that the center seat belts are accessible.
2. Verify that the center seat belts have no twists or tears in the webbing.
3. Snap the center seat belt latch plate into the buckle.
4. Sharply tug on the seat belt latch plate and the buckle. Verify that the seat belt latch plate and the buckle remain locked when tugged.
5. Push the button on the buckle.
Verify that the seat belt latch plate releases easily from the buckle.
Verify that the button returns to its original position.

Repeat the inspection procedure, steps 2-10, from the rear seats. The child restraint feature is located on the outboard position for
the rear seat.

Repeat the center seat belt inspection procedure, steps 1-5, from the rear seat.

For information on removal of the rear seats cushions refer to Seat Replacement - Rear (Extended Cab W/4th Door) Seat Replacement - Rear (Extended Cab) Seat Replacement - Rear (60/40 Split) in Seats.

Emergency Locking Retractors

CAUTION: Perform this test in an area clear of other vehicles or obstructions. Do not conduct this test on the open road. A large, empty parking lot is suitable. Failure to observe this precaution may result in damage to the vehicle and possible personal injury.

1. Fasten the seat belts, an assistant is needed when the retractor under test is not part of the driver seat belt.
2. Accelerate the vehicle slowly to 16 km/h (10 mph) and apply the brakes firmly.
3. Verify that the seat belt locks when braking firmly.
4. If the belt does not lock, proceed with the following steps.
4.1. Remove the seat belt retractor assembly.
4.2. Tilt the seat belt retractor slowly.

4.3. Ensure that the seat belt webbing can be pulled from the retractor at an inclination of 15 degrees or less and cannot be pulled from the retractor at an inclination of 60 degrees or more.
4.4. If the seat belt retractor does not operate as described, replace the retractor assembly.

CAUTION: To avoid personal injury to the occupants of the vehicle, observe the following precautions:
More than one supplier's seat belts are used, therefore, install ONLY the seat belt components specified in the GM parts catalog.
To verify that the correct seat belt components were installed, insert the seat belt latch in the seat belt buckle. The latch must be fully seated and be retained in the buckle until purposely released.

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the rear seat, if required.
2. Remove the rear quarter trim panel.
3. Remove the rear seat belt to body bolts.

4. Remove the rear seat belt retractor to body bolt (1).
5. Remove the retractor from the vehicle.

One or more mice got into my 2002 Silverado over the winter and gnawed away at a couple of places on the driver's seatbelt (they had to crawl up into the seat to do it). The seatbelt top recoils into the seat itself, and I can't figure out how to get at it. I cut away the frayed parts and used a candle flame to sear the exposed edges so that they will not fray any more. Not that much was frayed off, so I don't think it's a safety issue, but the belt looks awful. The truck is in great shape, looks great, and only has 17,000 miles on it. I want to sell it and would really like to replace the seatbelt. But how to do it?

I can't find instruction's on how to replace the seat belt for you. But I can tell you this if it's coming out of the seat then your going to have pull the seat cover up to get to the bolt or bolt's holding it in. The seat cover usually has a plastic channel that fit's into each other at the bottom of the cover. Once you get that unsnapped you may have a few hog rings to cut out and replace later then you can pull the cover up. Also you probably have a trim piece to unsnap where the belt come's out. If you have a pick a part by you where you go pull your own part's at the junk yard. Then maybe you can find a seat belt that is good and practice taking it out on that seat.

When buckled up on the passenger side, the seat belt won't release so the passenger can lean forward.

First of all thank you so for your donation. If you can't get any slack on your seat belt it sound's like you need to replace your seat belt. You get one from a pick a part or I can help you find a new one. Which way would you like to go?
