I am trying to get my 98 saturn back on the road. It wasn't driven for a year and now i'm getting it back on the road. I changed spark plugs, topped off all fluids, checked brake lines, replaced the battery etc....

The exhaust for the most part looks alright but as you see by the pictures the exhaust pipe is falling apart. I don't know much about cars obviously but I was wondering if this piece is easily replaceable with basic knowledge and for a reasonable price. I can't imagine spending 200-300 at a monro's. Thanks for your help !

That's the muffler. It is common for them to rust on any car, but with GM products, my experience has been they rust out a little more often because of the water vapor that condenses in them. To replace this yourself is not financially smart. You will need a floor jack, ($100.00), jack stands, ($30.00), a hack saw, a ratchet and socket set to tighten the clamps, and about three hours of your time. This will go faster with air tools and an air compressor.

Sears used to charge $5.00 to install their mufflers. You will get the job done in less than a half hour and the pipes will be in the correct orientation so they don't bang and rattle on the body or other parts.
