Noise

I have a 1995 Saturn SL1 1.8L V4. Mileage is 160026. There is a loud sound on the front driver side on the wheel. I checked out all the brakes and tie rods and joints and everything is fine. The sound is almost like the sound of a flat tire. It only happens when stopping. It sounds and feels like something is about to break and it feels too dangerous to drive. The brake pedal also goes down pretty much to the floor when stopping. I can't figure out what's making this loud noise! Please help. Thanx.

Sounds like a warped rotor. Can you feel it pulsing as your braking?

Yes, it is pulsing when I brake. I don't understand because when I looked at the rotors, they looked perfectly fine.

The naked eye can't pick it up. Replace the pads, rotors together, clean and lubricate with caliper grease all surfaces that meet as well as the pins the calipers slide on.

If you have rear drum brakes, remove the drum, spray down the shoes and hardware with brake kleen adjust the shoes out to the point that when the drum is put on it will just drag slightly.

Well, I know this. You have a brake pulsation and a low brake pedal, so regardless of the noise you need to do this anyways. The noise you describe I would interpret as a noise I have heard from a pulsating rotor. If it was mine I would use bendix pads and wearever rotors. If you have ANY questions along the way, you can use pics to help describe it. But feel free to ask as needed.

Also, If you want to help verify further the pulsation, take it on the thruway and as your getting off it, the puulsation should be substantially more prevelent than city driving.

One last thing, you have a 1.9 motor SOHC and it isn't a "v".

Yeah, you're right. Sorry about that misinformation about the liter and valve thing. I'm working on no sleep for the past couple days so i'm not thinking straight. Anyway, thank you so much for your help and I will do what you said. I remember that half of the stuff that goes wrong with these things you can't see. I'm sure that what you said will take care of the problem. Thank you so much for your help. I will get some sleep and think better tomorrow and fix the problem. Thanx.
