96 saturn issues

I recently had the plugs and wires replaced on my '96 saturn sl1. It's a 5 speed standard, with 169000 km's.

My car is idling very rough and backfiring. I put in a bottle of gas line antifreeze, and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and still the same issue. everytime it backfires the check engine comes on.

Any ideas?

If you search through the Saturn posts, you'll find several good posts. I'll try to take a quick look. May be a vacuum leak, coolant temp sensor, egr valve are the big ones that come to mind. The codes should get red to know what the CEL is unhappy about.

The local saturn expert is peppermrj as you'll see going through the posts.
