We just returned from a vacation that required us to drive through the mountains on I-68 in Western Maryland. As soon as we returned to our home, we noticed a strong gasoline odor in the garage a few minutes after we finished driving. The next morning, after driving 30-40 minutes I looked under the hood to check the transmission fluid and did not detect an odor. As soon as I removed the key, retrieved my lunch from the trunk and walked on the passenger side of the car I noticed the odor again (although not as strong). Could this be a fuel leak? Is the fuel filter clogged? Is it safe to drive? We're planning to take it to Saturn, but wondered what we should ask them to do.

Hey,
First check the obvious, the fuel cap. Next any drips on the floor?

Fuel systems on todays car are rather high tech. Even the fuel tank cap has to hold pressure and vent when necessary. There is a vapor recovery tank that also has to hold pressure, vent, and be purged at times.

I believe you might have just noticed the odor while venting was occuring. However never overlook what could be a serious safety hazard. Have the system inspected.

Good luck and let us know. :)
