We just bought our Saturn about a month ago from a private owner. It has about 74000 on it. A few weeks ago I started noticing a strong gasoline odor. I looked around to see if there were any puddles under the car and didn't see anything. The smell kept coming back every now and then so I finally got under the car and looked around and I found that gasoline had leaked out and was covering the bottom of the fuel tank. I had the car towed to the dealer and they told me that it was the fuel pump and it would cost about $880 to repair. I've looked around and saw that I could buy a fuel pump for about $300. I've had some limited DIY experience with my cars. How difficult would it be to do it myself, or what are the chances that I would be able to find someone who could do the repair for less?

I also noticed that someone else with the same car/mileage had the same problem. Is there a recall or anything that I should know about?

Before you pay $300.00 for a fuel pump, price them out on ebay. Generally sell new between 40 and 60 bucks.

Long ago I R&R'd many fuel tanks to replace fuel gauge sender units and leaky tanks. Would not do it again as there is always something else rusted and busted which should be fixed and job turns into a weekend project. Pay someone to do it for you.

First of all I would do the cheapest route of finding out u need a new fuel pump, I would get it pressure tested first, Then spend the money for a new pump, Also youre whole fuel tank has to be dropped to change the pump, Are u getting a check engine light on. Some times youre filler hose from the gas filler neck rubber hose becomes rotton or weak in which cause the fuel to leak, Of course if you got a crook of a mechanic shop they will say oh no, U need a new fuel pump kit, Also blah. Blah. Etc, Its not that difficult to do the fuel pump, Just dropping the fuel tank with fuel is a real pita, If u can do it, It will save u some $$$$$. Saturn fuel tank is a plastic tank, Its the same tank as in chevy Cavalier, Pretty sure the pumps are close to the same price. I really dont know why they charge so much for a fuel pump.

Good Luck.
