Not a tranny problem, most likely a bad injector if you have good spark and compression in number 5 cylinder. Try to hold a long screwdriver to the injector and see if you can feel it clicking, compare to the other injectors. Also make sure the injector is getting power and flashing a ground when running if you can access it.

Thanks for the advice. Tried what you said and it felt like it was clicking open just like the one next to it, but maybe it needs to be under load, since that seems to be when it acts up. If I can get a loaner tool fronm the store down the street i'll try to check the compression. Does the car need to be cold when I try this, like when you change the plugs? And what am I looking for as far as #'s for good compression?

2002 Camry LE, 113,000 miles, 4 Cyl. Automatic Trans.

When I accelerate the car shutters like the transmisssion can not find the right gear to shift to & the check engine light comes on. My code reader displays P0304, misfire Cyl. 4. I have changed the spark plugs and check the transmission fluid. Could this be the fuel filter? What next?

Check the compression at least in that cylinder, and also the injector, is gas being sprayed thru the injector?

I have a 2000 Camry that had the check engine light come on. Code came up P0301 for a misfire in the first cylinder. Suggestion was to change the spark plugs and wires. I also smelled a sulfur smell which made me think the catalytic converter. My question: which should I change first to see if it fixes the problem?

The misfire will cause the cat. Converter to prematurely fail. The misfire needs to be fixed before anything else.
