Hi,
I have a feeling I know the problem. This vehicle was originally equipped with R-12 refrigerant. That has been discontinued and is no longer available. You will need to complete a conversion to 134A. The fittings for the low-pressure side (charging port) are a different size, as you found.
The proper way to do this is to recover any R-12 left in the system. Disconnect all the lines and flush the parts with R134a to remove any excess oil. Then replace the drier, and accumulator.
Then conversion fittings are installed to the present one and charge the system using pressure gauges and temperature. You should end up with a charge of approximately 75-80 percent of the amount of R-12
If the system has leaked down the 134 will leak down faster, so replace/repair the leaking part. Also, make sure that the oil in the system is changed as well.
This procedure can't be done with the freon you purchased. It will need an A/C vacuum/charging station to properly do it.
Here is a link that explains how to vacuum and recharge the system:

I hope this helps.
Take care,
Joe
