When I try to start my car, it doesn't. And then I try to hold it and push the gas pedal, it starts. I can hear like a liquid noise when I try to start it. I am a girl and they said that mechanics try to exploit girls because we don't know much about cars. I am scared that one day it won't start. I heard someone say that it can be a throttle problem, but I am not sure.

Hi,

The liquid sound has me confused. Can you tell approximately where it is coming from? Also, when it does finally start, have you ever noticed black smoke from the exhaust?

The idea that you have to press the accelerator usually indicates the fuel pressure is too high and flooding the engine. By pressing the pedal, you turn off the fuel supply to clear a flooded engine.

Next, is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running? If it is, have the computer scanned. Here is a quick video showing how it's done:

I realize most people don't own a scan tool. However, often times a parts store will check for codes free of charge. If you have it done, let me know what the codes are that you found.

If possible, let me know approximately where the sound is coming from and if you ever noticed black smoke from the exhaust. This sounds like the crankshaft angle sensor or the fuel pump has gone out, when you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

Please run down this guide and report back.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for replying. The smoke coming from the exhaust is white. The liquid thing I only heard it this morning. When I tried to start it, it was cranking with a sound of some sort liquid. I have already scanned it with a mechanic and they found nothing wrong with it. When engine is running, engine light is not on.

Hi,

Does the white smoke continue while the engine warms up? Also, are you located in a cold climate?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm trying to narrow things down. If the white smoke never stops, it could be coolant getting into the combustion chamber via a bad head gasket. Take a look through this link and let me know if anything mirrors what you experience:

Let me know.
