Hi,

I got the power steering lines replaced 2 years ago. I went to Jiffy Lube last week to get my oil changed and my power steering fluid flush. After the flush, they had me step on the brakes, put the car in drive and turn the wheel all the way. They said that they heard a noise when I was turning the wheel. Any ideas what the problem is? They didn't say what the noise sounded like.

Hi,

That is a tough one without knowing approximately what they heard. Have you ever noticed anything? For example, a creaking, clunking, or anything that sounds out of the ordinary?

I ask because there could be a steering component, suspension bushing, and other different things that can make noise when they start to wear. Even the pump will make noise when under a load.

Do me a favor. Get a helper for this. Open the hood and have the helper start the engine and turn the steering back and forth as you did. See if you hear anything. If you do, record it, and upload it for me to hear. Hopefully, I'll be able to identify it.

Also, I'm not sure where you are located. I'm in PA and we have a yearly safety inspection requirement. That is when the things I mentioned above are checked closely. If you live somewhere that requires such an inspection, they should catch anything that is failing. If you have a shop that performs such inspections, you may want to request them to check the front steering and suspension components for concerns.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

I did what you said to do, and I got a helper. I heard a noise. I've attached the video.
Other than the video, there's been only 3 times where I heard a funny noise. I was parked next to the sidewalk like I was in the video and was doing what jiffy lube had me do after the flush.
I also forgot to mention that jiffy lube said that the problem was either the axle or power steering pump.

Hi,

I heard a slight noise. It certainly has nothing to do with an axle. The noise may be from the pump, but it doesn't sound like a concern at this point.

Does the power assist function seem to work properly? Have you noticed anything as far as the performance changes from the PS pump?

The noise that I heard could be from a few different belt-driven accessories as well such as the alternator.

What I suggest is at this point, to continue driving the vehicle. I don't feel it is a concern. If it starts getting louder or you notice a change in the performance, let me know and we'll jump into it. However, I suspect it has made that noise for some time and you didn't notice it.

Take care and let me know if you have other questions.

Joe

No, I haven't noticed anything as far as the performance changes from the ps pump.
I'll let you know if the noise gets louder or if I notice a change in performance.
Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.
