I had bought a Mazda3 from an auction and had to replace my electric power steering. After doing so, my mechanic let me know that I would have to wait 2-3 days for the power steering to kick in. (Something about waiting for the Mazda's electric system to integrate with the electric power steering that was installed).
Having driven the Mazda for a little more than a day, I had seen no difference in the amount of force it took me to make one turn. I am now coming to you with the question. Will the electric power steering work after 2-3 days as my mechanic had said or should I be spending my hard earned pennies elsewhere. This is a huge issue for me because this is my first car and I don't have much money to be spending on wrong parts or anything like that.

I don't think your mechanic knows what he is doing.
What was the reason replacing the steering system?
Was the system checked for trouble codes?

That's what I'm afraid of. The original power steering part was punctured and leaking after a collision, after having the body damage repaired, my mechanic replaced the power steering, then told me to wait 2-3 days.

And no, it has not been checked for trouble codes, not yet at least.

You mentioned electric power steering and now you are saying it is leaking. Which is which? Hydraulic and electric power steering are different systems.

If it is hydraulic, something is wrong.
