Can these two connections be split with a dual post battery, or do they have to remain in contact?

Yes, they can be split and some cables connected to the top post and some to the side post, but all must be on a positive connection. Be aware to disconnect the battery for other services, the negative cable should be disconnected first, then reconnected last. That way, if the wrench accidentally touches the positive post and a metal part of the vehicle at the same time, nothing will happen.
