I have a 1984 Pontiac Sunbird, 1.8 liter. The problem is that the engine races (revs up) unexpectedly and also chugs like it is losing power. This does not alway occur, but is intermittent. It seems like this happens after it has been running awhile. Anyuway, it was taken to the shop for the same problem, and a new fuel pump and filter were installed. However, a month later it is still having the same promblem. Is this an electrical problem, or related to a computer module? Also, could this be related to a fuel injection problem? Any thoughts or similar problelms from anyone else?

Usually I start out by doing a simple tuneup. Air filter, spark plugs, oil change, clean throttle/carb and see how she runs. Total cost if you do it yourself.... $35-$40... In a 1984 vehicle it certainly can't hurt. :)
