Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Pontiac Montana 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 73000k miles

We just replaced the battery today, as the previous battery was no longer any good. The van gets power but will not start. When you turn the key, we here a clicking but nothing happens, and then it goes dead. We don't know if it is the security feature, which we tried to reset, or the starter or something else. Do you have any ideas on what it might be?

Hello,

Did you try to jump start it? If not try it. If it starts take battery and have it tested. It doesn't happen often but it happens, you may have gotten a bad battery right off the shelf.

We did check the battery and it is good. We had it started briefly and then died. We were told that it is probably the security system and it shut the fuel off. We have tried to reprogram it a few different ways, but it still will not work. When we try to start it, you can hear spinning and then it just dies. Any ideas?

It could be a combination of problems.

First it sounds like you possibly have a starter issue.

Next could be a sensor or other problem.

Is you engine light on? If so will need to see about getting codes pulled.

Well we tried everything, and the new battery we were given was bad, however, it turns out the PCM theft module was not working and had to be replaced.

Thanks for all of the ideas!
