hi i am going to replace an o2 sensor on my 96 grand am gt. i have heard it is on the exhaust pipe in front of and in back of the cat converter. i only see the sensor behind the converter and it is the one before that i need to replace. if you can tell me where it is it would be very helpful. is it on the manifold?

On a V6 model the HO2S1 is located in the rear exhaust manifold. Right before it connects to the exhaust pipe. The HO2S2 is located behind the cat converter.

Nope. Should be the only sensor with wires going to it in the exhaust manifold.

Suggested Repair

On the 3.1 V6, replace the upstream oxygen sensor (HO2S1) in the rear exhaust manifold, just before it connects to the exhaust pipe. The downstream sensor (HO2S2) is behind the catalytic converter. The upstream sensor should be the only wired sensor in the exhaust manifold.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am GT with a 3.1 V6 needed the location of the oxygen sensor ahead of the catalytic converter and could only see the sensor behind it. The expert said HO2S1 is in the rear exhaust manifold just before the exhaust pipe, while HO2S2 is behind the converter, and confirmed it is the only wired sensor in the manifold.
