Hi,
I am writing about my daughter's car. I live outside the US, she lives in Franklin, TN. Her 2000 Grand Am, won't start if the fuel gage gets down to about a half a tank. It is rather random when it won't start, but if she adds gas it starts and runs fine. It never runs out of gas when it is running, but often when it gets down to around a half a tank and sits over night it won't start until gas is added. A shop told her it was the fuel pump and it would cost $650 to repair. I am not there (I live in Costa Rica) to help her with it. Would like your opinion if that diagnosis and estimate sounds reasonable.

It sure doesn't sound like fuel pump. Are you sure the fuel gauge isn't out of calibration and 1/2 isn't really "empty? $650.00 sounds a little "stiff" for a fuel pump. The only other thing I can think of is that somehow the fuel pump tube has gotten bent or warped and isn't in the bottom of the tank.
