1996 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
Firstly ill start off by telling you im a Fully licensed heavy duty service technician so we can avoid laymans terms. I am not an auto Tech but I understand electricity etc. Problem im having is car wont charge. Had alternator off and tested by some old guy at the one shop for over 20 years and he says its ok. So I put it back in the car. I check to make sure my engine is grounded and it was. I checked the power at the main post on the alt and it read low 9.6 volts but same as the battery voltage. The plugin for the alt has 3 wires, a big orange one and 2 smaller ones. The big one is live at all times, The smaller ones which I suspect are fielding wire and indicator light wires and jumped them to the power post of the alternator to ensure it was being fielded and observed no voltage chargining at the batt. Everyone likes to say the batt is toast and it likely is from all the messing around but I also know I could put the worst batt in there, boost the car and with a working alternator see a reading of over 13 volts at the batt so lets leave the batt behind us right away. So is the guy at the repair shop who tested it wrong? Becuase I jumped the fielding wire to ensure it would field and charge but it doesnt.
